A song of ice and fire/ Game of Thrones »  A few religions

there are many faiths, and many faithful

I’m glad someone made this because I find the religions of ASOIAF to be utterly fascinating.

  • I always thought that the Drowned God was the worst of them. Perhaps because I hate the Iron Islanders and I find their religion and their ways/customs or whatever else you want to call them to be cruel, sadistic, and bereft of honor. I kept hoping that one of them would change my mind, but none have. Asha Greyjoy is quite literally the ONLY one of them who I like and she seems to become more and more of a nonbeliever as time goes on.
  • The Faith of the Seven reminds me so much of Christianity (I wonder if GRRM intended that). The concept of seven gods all actually being seven aspects of one god is strikingly similar to the idea behind the “holy trinity” of the father, son, and holy ghost of the Christian faith. Also, the awful pious members of the Seven remind me so much of the religious zealots known as “evangelicals.”
  • The Old Gods remind me somewhat of older polytheistic religions that are based around nature. I actually like this religion because it seems to be the least judgmental of them all.
  • However I feel about religion in general, I do enjoy many aspects of R’hllor. I’m not crazy about the whole “burning infidels alive” nonsense, but I like that every red priest we’ve encountered in the series actually wields the POWER that they claim to have. They can actually back up their claims with demonstrations of power, be it shadow demons, fire-healing, resurrection, etc. I found the story of Azor Ahai fascinating as well. I’m not sure which religion I’d compare it to honestly… at times it reminds me of Christianity, but for the most part it doesn’t. It has a very dark sort of feeling to it, and I know many people compare it to “devil-worship” but that seems like a very unfair and almost stereotypical comparison.
  • I know little and less about the Storm God. The only story I’m aware of when it comes to this religion, is the construction of Storm’s End and how many times the castle had to be rebuilt. An ancient tale, but in the end, the god(s) still failed.
  • I also know very little about the Great Other, aside from what Melisandre has spoken of him. It would seem logical to conclude that this god is the leader (or the driving force) behind the White Walkers. And to that end, I suppose it would be an evil god.

~* Viking Funeral Prayer *~

Am I the only person who thinks that the dead religions of this world are SO MUCH FUCKING COOLER than the lame ones of today? I don’t wanna get too deep into this (as a non-believer, the point is sort of moot), but I just think that this prayer is so much cooler (and far more uplifting) than any of the Christian prayers I was taught as a child.

If the Westboro Baptist Church counts as a cult so do:

  • Southern
  • Baptist Churches
  • Baptist Churches
  • Presbyterian Churches
  • Seven Day Adventists
  • Non-Denominational Churches
  • Mormons (not that many non-Mormons will argue me there, hypocrites)
  • Evangelical Churches
  • Anglican Churches
  • Calvinist Churches
  • The Amish
  • Quakers (That includes my mother btw)
  • Lutheran Churches
  • Basically any Protestant Churches I missed
  • Catholic Churches
  • The Current State of the Orthodox Christian Church
  • Basically all of modern Christianity
The Westboro Baptist Church is using the exact same passages from the exact same book that allows the entire religion to pick and choose what they want to apply to their life.
These guys just apply shittier parts.

That is why I DON’T believe that some atheist went back to being believer. If a person did that - that person was never an atheist in the first place.

Oh no.  Don’t fall into the “no true atheist” trap.  All it takes to be an atheist is a lack of belief in a god.  The REASONS for that lack of belief are very important, however.  If one becomes an atheist because of skepticism and reason, they will likely stay an atheist.  If one becomes an atheist because they know nothing about religion or science and are just doing it to look cool, then I can easily imagine someone changing their mind by selling them a big enough load of bullshit.

I don’t doubt that there are some people who are atheist just because they know nothing about religion.  It is the atheist who becomes atheist because they come to see the bullshit of religion that is far more likely to never go back.

Well spoken, Steve.

The dictionary definition of God is “a supernatural creator and overseer of the universe.” Included in this definition are all deities, goddesses and supernatural beings. Since the beginning of recorded history, which is defined by the invention of writing by the Sumerians around 6,000 years ago, historians have cataloged over 3700 supernatural beings, of which 2870 can be considered deities.

So next time someone tells me they believe in God, I’ll say “Oh which one? Zeus? Hades? Jupiter? Mars? Odin? Thor? Krishna? Vishnu? Ra?…” If they say “Just God. I only believe in the one God,” I’ll point out that they are nearly as atheistic as me. I don’t believe in 2,870 gods, and they don’t believe in 2,869.

Science is only truly consistent with an atheistic worldview with regards to the claimed miracles of the gods of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Moreover, the true believers in each of these faiths are atheists regarding the specific sacred tenets of all other faiths. Christianity rejects the proposition that the Quran contains the infallible words of the creator of the universe. Muslims and Jews reject the divinity of Jesus.

I like this.

It’s about time I saw one that wasn’t “peace” or “tolerance”

I love this bit.

Yes, and Judaism. And Christianity. And Islam. And millions of others.

Or how about “freedom” of religion turning into, “I’ll impose my religion on an entire nation because my god thinks that I should.”

The More I Study Religions The More I Am Convinced That Man Never Worshiped Anything But Himself.

This is appropriate considering my recent post about atheism.

Jesus Christ

OH MY GOSH THIS. I get irrationally upset at the idea and image of “Anglo Jesus.” Dude was a JEW from the MIDDLE EAST, and if he was blond haired and blue eyed, somebody in those damn books would have mentioned that he looked nothing like anyone else in the fucking region. Thank you and good night.

Well, I am offended when you say Jesus was black because I really don’t think Jesus existed. Lol, I’d be just as offended if you said that Jesus was a WASP, Hispanic, or Asian.
Actually, come to think of it, I’m not offended at all. I find nothing about anthropomorphism to be insulting really. When you think about it, Christianity may have originated in the Middle East, but it became most dominant in Europe for a majority of its history. Therefore, most (if not all) of the classical artwork that depicts Jesus as a white man is just the anthropomorphism of the idol that most Europeans worshiped. This isn’t rocket-science. The same thing happens in ancient religions and mythologies; most Norse gods mysteriously were bearded men with fair skin and red or brown hair, most Greek gods looked like the ancient Greeks, and so on… you get the idea. So when I walked into my old job’s back office and saw a picture of a black Jesus on the wall, I was NOT offended at all. I simply looked at it and said to myself, “Ah, anthropomorphism.” And that’s really all it is.
I think it’s just part of human nature to want our “gods” to look as we do.
