In today’s Washington Post

I’d personally love it more women were in Congress; but to be specific, I’d love it if FEMINISTS were in Congress. I honestly feel like we will never see real change as long as old, religious men remain in power.

And this is why I can’t understand why anyone would be conservative.

An excellent article that details the main reasons that many young adults are liberals. However, while I agree with all the points, I can’t help but disagree with the assertion that “all” young adults are liberal; I know plenty of conservatives who are my age and younger. Granted most of them are this way due to simple ignorance on the issues, influence of their ignorant parents/elders, or they are just blinded by fear and racism. Either way, when I see young people supporting conservative ideals, it puts a sour taste in my mouth and I worry about the future of this nation.

“I will pick up that label and wear it as a Badge of Honor.”

~ [Jimmy Smits as] Matt Santos, The West Wing

I am proud to be a liberal!!!

partial text:

Santos: It’s true, Republicans have tried to turn ‘liberal’ into a bad word. Well, liberals ended slavery in this country.
Vinick: A Republican president ended slavery.
Santos: Yes, a liberal Republican. What happened to them? They got run out of your party. What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican party? I’ll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created social security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. What did Conservatives do? They opposed every one of those programs. Every one. So when you try to hurl the word ‘liberal’ at my feet, as if it were dirty, something to run away from, something that I should be ashamed of, it won’t work, Senator, because I will pick up that label and wear it as a badge of honor.

I loved this episode :3 I wish they had The West Wing on Netflix :/

I’ve never seen this show, but I’d love to hear a democratic candidate say these things.

And for some reason “liberal” is a dirty word?

While the poster is indeed correct, the problem with the entire system is that a lot of conservatives (or “independents” aka: the word that republicans use to make themselves seem like they’re centrists) hijack a lot of these issues. I know a guy who single-handedly attempted to explain how a lot of these movements and laws were the work of conservatives… granted, this guy is a fucking moron, but he’s still a huge part of the problem and an example of how easily manipulated small-minded people are. Every word of this poster rings true, but the conservative agenda is all about manipulating history and altering truth; they take something like child labor laws and then make up a story about how it was the work of conservatives. But for other issues, such as school lunch programs, they label them as “liberal” with a negative connotation by throwing the term “socialism” around, as if any of the GOP candidates could even define it.

A world without liberals would be a dark, frightening, and theocratic world. All I can do is hope that the next democrat to run for the presidency is an actual democrat.

Yeah, find a job! What’s wrong with you?

I don’t know about you, but this just punched me in my truth bone. I think it’s located around my spleen.

Yep. This pretty much sums it up.

I have family members that make me feel this way whenever I see them. They have no sense of what is really going on, and whenever they open their mouths I can almost see a silhouette of Bill O’Rielly standing over them whispering in their ears.

My cousin (in his 30’s) and my uncle (in his 60’s) were discussing Social Security and retirement over the summer, and my cousin was essentially saying how he was worried that by the time he was 60, social security would no longer exist and he’d be losing a lot of money… a reasonable concern. My uncle, in all his great “intellect” says, “Nah, you’ll be okay with where you are, it’s the generation after you that’s gonna be left completely screwed.” And he didn’t say it with sympathy or worry, he said it as if he were looking forward to it. There was a slight smugness in his tone, something that let me know exactly how he felt about my generation. It’s something I find quite insulting. Mind you, this man also believes that Obama is a Kenyan Muslim who is trying to empower the Middle East and destroy Israel… so if you needed context, now you have it.

A big caveat. This does not mean that privileged leftists get to erase the oppression of non privileged ones. Someone calling you on your privilege doesn’t equal infighting.

This seems too far-fetched for me… there aren’t even enough outspoken base-liberals in this country. We’re going to call on the few groups of communists, anarchists, etc., and ask them to band together while their ideologies differ entirely?? How would that ever work? We can’t even get every liberal/democrat to support gay marriage. There is no solidarity on the left.

Where does your preferred presidential candidate stand on gay rights? This handy chart will tell you. Mad impressive. Source.

Very interesting.

I love how EQUAL PAY AND BENEFITS even if they get INTO the military is a contention point with some candidates. What. The. Fuck.

LOOKING AT YOU HUNTSMAN! I expected SLIGHTLY better of you.

This is actually really interesting. If you’re voting in 2012, I suggest reviewing this and reblogging it for others to see.
