Praying to the deity has no measurable, real-world effect.

“Between them, the sciences of textual criticism, archaeology, physics, and molecular biology have shown religious myths to be false and man-made and have also succeeded in evolving better and more enlightened explanations. The loss of faith can be compensated by the newer and finer wonders that we have before us, as well as by immersion in the near-miraculous work of Homer and Shakespeare and Milton and Tolstoy and Proust, all of which was also ‘man-made’ (though one sometimes wonders, as in the case of Mozart). I can say this as one whose own secular faith has been shaken and discarded, not without pain.

…Thus, dear reader, if you have come this far [p. 153] and found your own faith undermined - as I hope - I am willing to say that to some extent I know what you are going through. There are days when I miss my old convictions as if they were an amputated limb. But in general I feel better, and no less radical, and you will feel better too, I guarantee, once you leave hold of the doctrinaire and allow your chainless mind to do its own thinking.”

- Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great.

I love this quote so very much.

There are days that I truly feel like I knew this man, because whenever I read his words, I heard them as if he were speaking directly to me.

Vaccines, antidotes and antibiotics work. Prayer and faith don’t.

And oh dear, you have NO IDEA how much I seriously wish most of the people who doubt it would just actually jump out of a tenth floor window. Please, just fucking do it.

That is why I DON’T believe that some atheist went back to being believer. If a person did that - that person was never an atheist in the first place.

Oh no.  Don’t fall into the “no true atheist” trap.  All it takes to be an atheist is a lack of belief in a god.  The REASONS for that lack of belief are very important, however.  If one becomes an atheist because of skepticism and reason, they will likely stay an atheist.  If one becomes an atheist because they know nothing about religion or science and are just doing it to look cool, then I can easily imagine someone changing their mind by selling them a big enough load of bullshit.

I don’t doubt that there are some people who are atheist just because they know nothing about religion.  It is the atheist who becomes atheist because they come to see the bullshit of religion that is far more likely to never go back.

Science is only truly consistent with an atheistic worldview with regards to the claimed miracles of the gods of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Moreover, the true believers in each of these faiths are atheists regarding the specific sacred tenets of all other faiths. Christianity rejects the proposition that the Quran contains the infallible words of the creator of the universe. Muslims and Jews reject the divinity of Jesus.

  • Bill Moyers: Why is this of such concern to you, Dan? If my faith doesn't pick your pocket or break your bone, as Thomas Jefferson said, why should you care what I believe?
  • Daniel Dennett: I wouldn't, except that religious people care so much about what everybody else believes. Why do Christians care what Muslims believe? Why do Muslims care what Christians believe? To me, the really dangerous thing about religion--and this is not everybody, of course. It's not half, thank goodness, but it's many--and the one thing I think is really dangerous is that it gives people a gold-plated excuse to stop thinking.
  • Bill Moyers: To stop thinking?
  • Daniel Dennett: To say, "I don't have to think about that, because my religion says, 'This is right. This is wrong.' It's as clear as that, it's black and white. I don't have to think about this anymore. It's just a matter of faith." And we honor that. We say, "Oh, well, if it's a matter of faith." We have to stop honoring people for stopping thinking.
