From the TV Series Becker, staring Ted Danson.
This was one of my favorite shows when I was a teenager and it still is. Me and my dad used to watch it together whenever it was on; my mom and my brother started eventually too. It was just very easy to relate to: a doctor living in the Bronx, trying to make life better for his patients… only he hates absolutely everything and has a very negative/realistic outlook. lol
I remember the first time I saw an episode, he made a subtle joke about something religious that his very Christian receptionist said. My dad had seen the show a few times before I had, so he laughed at the joke and then said to me, “He’s an atheist.”
I didn’t find it strange or particularly remarkable, I just continued to watch the show. And I never really even thought about it until years later. There are a few episodes that feature his atheism as the main topic, and they really are incredibly funny and quite eye-opening. Now when I watch reruns of it, I notice so many little jokes I didn’t appreciate back when I first saw it. It was a great show, and I think it’s great that they were bold enough to make the main character an atheist back then; it still seems so taboo.
